Question

Write the reaction for the conversion of ethene to ethane?

Open in App
Solution

The organic compounds consisting of Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H) atoms are known as hydrocarbons.

Hydrocarbons are of two types depending on the kind of bonds formed between Carbon-Carbon atoms, saturated hydrocarbons, and unsaturated hydrocarbons

In organic conversion, the reagent reacts with a reactant molecule to produce an intermediate which is converted into final products.

In the conversion of an unsaturated alkene to a saturated alkane in the presence of a metal catalyst, a Hydrogen molecule (H2) is added to the double to form the saturated alkane product.

So this addition reaction is known as a hydrogenation reaction.

The conversion of Ethene to Ethane in the presence of Nickel (Ni) catalyst can be written as:

CH2=CH2+H-HNiCH3-CH3(ethene)(hydrogen)(ethane)
