Question

Write the reaction involved in lead storage battery.

Open in App
Solution

The lead storage battery is a rechargeable battery. Thus there are two sets of reaction involved in the lead storage battery.
  • Reaction involved in lead stroage battery when it is used are as follow:
Anode: Pb(s)+SO24(aq)PbSO4(s)+2e
Cathode: PbO2(s)+4H+(aq)+SO24(aq)+2ePbSO4(s)+2H2O(l)
Thus, overall cell reaction can be given as follow:
Pb(s)+PbO2(s)+4H+(aq)+2SO24(aq)2PbSO4(s)+2H2O(l)
  • Reaction involved during the recharging of the battery:
Anode: PbSO4(s)+2H2O(l)PbO2(s)+4H+(aq)+2SO24(aq)+2e
Cathode: PbSO4(s)+2ePb(s)+SO24(aq)
