Question

Write the reaction of ethene with chlorine.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

Ethene (C2H4) contains a double bond between two Carbon C atoms.

The halogenation of alkene is a reaction in which a dihalide is added to a molecule after the double bond linked between Carbon atoms has been broken. The halogen is added to the neighboring Carbon atoms from the opposite sides of the molecule to form the halogenated product.

Step 2:

The reaction of Ethene with Chlorine (Cl2) forms the 1,2-dichloroethane as the major product.

The chlorination reaction of Ethene can be written as:

CH2=CH2+Cl-ClClCH2-CH2Cl(Ethene)(Chlorine)(1,2-dichloroethane)
