Solution

Ethanol:

  1. Ethanol is also known as Ethyl alcohol.
  2. It has a chemical formula C2H5OH.

Oxidation of Ethanol:

  1. Ethanol in presence of acidified Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7), undergoes oxidation forming Ethanal or Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and water as products.
  2. Then, Acetaldehyde undergoes further oxidation to form Acetic acid or Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH).
  3. The reaction is given below:

CH3CH2OH(l)+[O]K2Cr2O7AcidifiedCH3CHO(l)+H2O(l)CH3CHO(l)+[O]K2Cr2O7AcidifiedCH3COOH(l)
