Question

Write the reactions of (i) aromatic and (ii) aliphatic primary amines with nitrous acid.

Open in App
Solution

(i) Aromatic primary amines react with nitrous acid at low temperatures (273-278K) to form diazonium salts.

C6H5NH2AnilineNaNo2+HCl−−−−−−−273278KC6H5+N2ClBenzene diazonium chloride+NaCl+2H2O

Note : Nitrous acid is produced by the reaction of NaNO_2 and HCl

(ii) Aliphatic primary amines react with nitrous acid to form aliphatic diazonium salts (unstable), which produce nitrogen gas and alcohols after decompostion.

RNH2+HNO2AlkylamineNaNo2+HCl−−−−−−−[R+N2Cl]Benzene diazonium chlorideH2OROHAlcohol+N2+HCl
