The reaction of aromatic primary amines with nitrous acid gives aromatic diazonium salts. The reaction of aliphatic primary amines with nitrous acid gives aromatic diazonium salts which decompose to form a mixture of compounds containing alkyl chlorides, alkenes and alcohols.
