Question

Write the reactions of oxygen with any two metals and non-metals.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Chemical reactions of oxygen with metals

  • All metals reacts with Oxygen (O2) to form metal oxides except Silver (Ag), Platinum (Pt), and Gold (Au) because they are less reactive.
  • Metal+OxygenMetaloxide

For example,

  1. 2Na(s)Sodium+O2(g)OxygenNa2O(s)Sodiumoxide
  2. Mg(s)Magnesium+O2(g)Oxygen2MgO(s)Magnesiumoxide
  • These metal oxides are basic.

For example,

  1. Na2O(s)Sodiumoxide+H2O(l)WaterNaOH(aq)Sodiumhydroxide
  2. MgO(s)Magnesiumoxide+H2O(l)WaterMg(OH)2(aq)Magnesiumhydroxide

Part 2: Chemical reactions of oxygen with non-metals

  • All non-metals reacts with Oxygen (O2) to form non-metal oxides.
  • Non-metal+Oxygennon-metaloxide

For example,

  1. S(g)Sulphur+O2(g)OxygenSO2(g)Sulphurdioxide
  2. N2(g)Nitrogen+2O2(g)Oxygen2NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide
  • These non-metal oxides are acidic in nature.

For example,

  1. SO2(g)Sulfurdioxide+H2O(l)WaterH2SO3(aq)Sufurousacid
  2. NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide+H2O(l)WaterHNO3(aq)Nitricacid+HNO2(aq)Nitrousacid
