Question

Write the relation for binding energy (B.E) (in MeV) of a nucleus of mass AZM, atomic number (Z) and mass number (A) in terms of the masses of its constituents - neutrons and protons.

Open in App
Solution

The binding energy in (MeV) is EB=(Zmp+NmnMZA)c2
Where mp= mass of proton , mn= mass of neutron, c=velocity of light.
Now N=AZ thus, EB=[Zmp+(AZ)mnMZA]c2=[Z(mpmn)+AmnMZA)c2
