Chemical formula: The representation of the number of atoms of each element present in a molecule of the compound is known as a molecule.

  • To write the chemical formula of a compound, we must know the symbols and valencies of various elements and radicals present in the compound.

Rules for writing a chemical formula:

  • Write the symbols of the elements radicals constituting the compound.
  • Write the valency of each element or radical.
  • Interchange the valency number of radicals or ions and write them as subscripts. Ignore the '+' and '—' signs.
  • If the valencies are divisible by a common factor, divide to simplify the formula.
