Write the significance of Federalism in the Indian Constitution

Significance of federal form of government for a country like India:

(i) One of the main features of the federal form of government is that there are two levels of governance in the country at least. In India, there are three levels of government: central government, state government and local bodies which are essential for the smooth functioning of a country like India.

(ii) Another feature is that the constitution must guarantee this federal system of government. The Constitution of India is not only a written document but also the lengthiest Constitution of the world. The powers and duties of both or all governments are listed in the constitution.

(iii) Division of powers is one of the main features of the federal form of government. In such a big country like India, a division of powers is necessary. The Constitution divided the powers between the Centre and the states in terms of the Union List, State List and Concurrent List in the Seventh Schedule.

(iv) The supremacy of the constitution is must in a federal form of government. To ensure that the rights of all citizens are properly safeguarded, the constitution must be supreme. In India, the Constitution is the supreme (or the highest) law of the land.

(v) The single judicial system is one of the prominent features of the federal system. In India, a single system of judiciary prevails. The Supreme Court is at the top, the High Courts at the state level and district and other subordinate courts are below.
