Question

Write the statement of Lenz's law of electromagnetic induction.
A 2m horizontal long straight conducting wire extending from east to west direction is falling with a speed of 5m/s perpendicular to the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field 0.3×104 tesla. Calculate the value of instantaneous emf induced across the ends of wire.

Solution

Lenz's law states that when an emf is generated by a change in magnetic flux according to Faraday's Law, the polarity of the induced emf is such, that it produces an current that's magnetic field opposes the change which produces it.

EMF induced across ends of wire moving perpendicularly in magnetic field is
Bvl=0.3×104T×5m/s×2m
=3×104V
