Solution

Hydrogen

  • Hydrogen(H) is the most abundant element in the stars, sun, and universe.
  • About 93% of atoms in the universe are Hydrogenatoms.
  • Hydrogen is the first element the periodic table.

Preparation of Hydrogen gas by Bosch's process.

Step 1

  • Production of water gas: A mixture of CarbonMonoxide(CO)andHydrogen(H2) being called water gas. They are produced by passing steam over a heated coke at 1000°C in a converter. This is an endothermic reaction.

C(s)Coke+H2O(g)Steam1000°CCO(g)Carbonmonoxide+H2(g)Hydrogen

Step 2

  • Separation of Hydrogen: Water gas formed from step 1 is mixed with steam and they are passed through a heated Iron(III)oxide(Fe2O3) and Chromium(III)oxide(Cr2O3) at a temperature of 450°C-500°C to get a mixture of Carbondioxide(CO2)andHydrogen(H2). The reaction is exothermic in nature.

CO(g)Carbonmonoxide+H2(g)Hydrogen+H2O(l)WaterFe2O3450-500°CO2(g)Carbondioxide+2H2(g)Hydrogen+Heat

Step 3

  • Removal of Carbon monoxide and Carbon dioxide from the mixture

(1) Removal of Carbondioxde(CO2) : The mixture of CO2+H2 is passed through cold water or Caustic potash (KOH) under pressure, it dissolves the

Carbondioxde(CO2) leaving behind Hydrogen(H2).

CO2(g)Carbondioxide+H2O(l)ColdwaterH2CO3Carbonicacid(l)

2KOH(aq)Causticpotash+CO2(g)CarbondioxdeK2CO3(aq)Potassiumcarbonate+H2O(l)Water

(2) Removal of Carbonmonoxide(CO): The solution is passed through the solution of Ammonicalcopper(I)Chloride, which dissolves the unreacted

Carbonmonoxide(CO) and leaving behind Hydrogen(H2).
