The cell membrane is also called as plasma membrane is a thin semi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of the cell. It is a double layer of proteins and lipids. The basic structure of cell membrane is called as the lipid bilayer. Phospholipids are the main component of the cell membrane. In addition, it also contains glycolipids and sterols. The lipid bilayer is embedded with proteins. The function of the cell membrane it regulates the entry of minerals, acts as a receptor, protects the cell, regulates the transport of substances in and out of the cell. It also plays a role in signalling and communication.
