Solution

IUPAC:

  • The worldwide using chemical names are created and developed by IUPAC, it follows certain rules for naming the compounds

IUPAC name of benzyl chloride:

Step 1: Identify the parent chain:

  • Here, the parent chain is benzene.

Step 2: Naming the substituents and positioning:

  • There is one methylene CH2substituent and chloro substituents are present here.
  • The benzyl means a benzene ring attached to a CH2 group and chloro means a substituent chloride is attached to it.
  • From the methyl group, two hydrogens were replaced and other groups are attached. So, the CH2 group will be called as methyl and chloro present which combines to form chloromethyl as chloro is first in alphabet then the methyl comes.

Step 3: IUPAC name of the compound:

  • Hence, the IUPAC name of this compound is chloromethyl benzene.

Structure of benzyl chloride:

Step 1: Finding the parent chain:

  • The parent chain presents here is benzyl which is a cyclic hydrocarbon.

Step 2: Finding and positioning the substituents.

  • The methylene and chloro substituents are present, where there is no numbering, So they are present in the first carbon.
  • Hence, the structure is
