Question

Write the symbol and valency of Stannous.

Open in App
Solution

Variable valency: Certain elements have more than one valency. They exhibit variable valency.

Such as Tin whose symbol is used as 'Sn' which is derived from the Latin word Stannum, having atomic number 50. Is electronic configuration is 2,8,18,18, 4.

The element ‘Tin’ corresponding to the atomic number 50 is often denoted by the symbol ‘Sn’ (derived from the Latin name for tin: Stannum). Since there are only 4 electrons in the outermost shell, tin’s valency can be written as 4.

Since tin exhibits variable valency, its valency can also be +2.

Hence stannous ion is represented as Sn2+.
