Ethane $(C_{2} H_{6})$ is the simplest hydrocarbon containing the $C - C$ single bond. It finds various applications in industries for manufacturing complex compounds. Some of its applications are:
It is a good source of fuel.
It is used to prepare ethene $(C_{2} H_{4})$ which is used as a feedstock for plastics. Ethene is also used to prepare ethanol $(C_{2} H_{5} O H)$ and ethanoic acid $(C H_{3} C O O H)$
It is also used in the preparation of Ethyl chloride $(C_{2} H_{5} C l)$ which is needed for the manufacturing of tetraethyllead $(C_{8} H_{20} P b)$ used as an antiknock agent in gasoline and jet fuels.
