Element - Mercury and Silver

Mercury and Silver are silvery-white colored metals. Mercury is liquid at room temperature. Elements that have an excess of electrons and a tendency to donate them are generally considered metals.

Uses of Mercury (Hg) -

1. Mercury expands or contracts even on the slightest change in temperature. That is why Mercury is used in thermometers, barometers, and other scientific apparatus.
2. The mixture of metals with mercury is known as Amalgam. Silver and Gold amalgams are used in dental fillings.
3. Mercury is used in mercury vapor lamps for lighting.

Uses of Silver (Ag) -

1. Silver is the best conductor of electricity due to which it is used in making electrodes and electroplating operations.
2. It is a precious metal and hence, used in making coins and pieces of jewellery.
3. It is also used in water purifiers.
