During the formation of the molecules or compounds atoms combine in certain fixed proportion that different atoms have different combining capacities that is its valency.
Silicate (SiO₃^2-), this is divalent.
Valency of Silicon is 4
Valency of Oxygen 2 (In its 3 oxygen atoms are there. So the total valency = 6.
Therefore, the net valency of silicate ion is 6-4= 2
