Characteristics:

1. Cactus leaves are reduced into spines which helps them to reduce water loss from leaves through transpiration (loss of water through leaves).
2. The stem of the cactus is covered with a thick waxy layer that helps in the retention of water.
3. Cactus roots go very deep into the soil for absorbing water.
