Solution

Identifying features::

  1. The distinguishing feature of Monera is that some members of Kingdom Monera can fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogenous compounds.
    These nitrogenous compounds are then utilized by other plants. Organisms other than monerans cannot fix atmospheric nitrogen.
  2. They possess or rigid cell wall made up of murein which is a kind of peptidoglycan. There is no cellulose present in the cell walls.

Monera:

  1. These are unicellular and prokaryotic organisms. They lack a nuclear membrane around their nucleus and all the membrane bound organelles such as mitochondria, chloroplast, etc
  2. Their genetic material lies unbound in the cytoplasm and this region is known as the nucleoid.
  3. When it comes to the mode of nutrition, Kingdom Monera shows extreme variation.
  4. Most of the monerans are heterotrophs and absorb the nutrition in the form of solution. There are some autotrophic monerans also present, like cyanobacteria which produce their food by reducing carbon dioxide.
  5. They reproduce mainly asexually by binary fission. They may also undergo genetic recombination.
  6. Examples are bacteria and mycoplasma.
