Question

Write two effects of Van der Waal's forces of attraction?

Open in App
Solution

Van der Waal's forces

The weak forces which exist between the covalent molecules are known as Van der Waal's forces.

Effects of Van der Waal's force of attraction

  • Van der Waal's forces act between molecules, helping them to 'stick together' as a solid/liquid. The stronger the forces, the more energy is required to beat them, so stronger Van der Waal's forces = higher boiling point.
  • If the compound is solid in the state the van der Waal's force will be maximum because they are tightly packed. If the compound is liquid in the state, the van der Waal's force will be minimal because the particles are very loosely packed.

Therefore, the two effects of Van der Waal's force of attraction are Boiling and physical state.
