Write two methods of preparation of methyl alcohol. Describe giving diagram. Give such a test of methyl alcohol which is not given by ethyl alcohol which is not given by ethyl alcohol. Give the chemical reactions.

Preparation of methyl alcohol:
(1) Hydrolysis of methyl chloride:
$C H_{3} - C l + aq KOH \to C H_{3} - O H + K C l$
(2) By hydrolysis of dimethyl ether with hot dil sulphuric acid under pressure.
$C H_{3} - O - C H_{3} + H_{2} O d i l H_{2} S O_{4} - ----- \to pressure 2 C H_{3} - O H$
