$x^{2} - 2 x - 1 = 0 a = 1 b = - 2 c = - 1$

$Δ = b^{2} - 4 a c (- 2)^{2} - 4 (1) (- 1) 4 + 4 = 8 > 0$
So roots are real and distinct
