Solution

The correct option is C Italy
Italy was divided into seven states during the 19th century. Among the seven states, only Sardinia-Piedmont was ruled by an Italian princely house. The northern regions were ruled by the Austrian Habsburgs, the southern regions were ruled by the Bourbon kings of Spain, and the central region was ruled by the Pope. Giuseppe Mazzini in the 1830s unsuccessfully tried to unify the fragmented Italian regions into a republic. Thereafter, Prime Minister Cavour led the movement for a unified Italy and succeeded in 1871. King Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the first king of unified Italy in 1871.
