Karnam Malleshwari, now a retired weightlifter, won the Bronze medal in weightlifting (women's - 69 kg) at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and became the first Indian woman to win an Olympics medal. She was honoured with the Arjuna Award and in 1999, she received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award that is considred to be India's highest sporting honour, and also the civilian Padma Shri award.
