It is the national emblem of India. The figures on top of the Ashokan pillars are known as Capitals. The Sarnath pillar’s capital consisted of four lions standing back to back. The lions were mounted on a circular base. The base has carvings of figures of a horse, a bull, a lion and an elephant each separated by a wheel called Dharma chakra. The whole capital is mounted on the top of a full bloom lotus.
