We first convert the Roman numerals into Hindu- Arabic numerals.

XCVIII = 100 - 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 98
LXVI = 50 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 66
CXL = 100 + 50 - 10 = 140

Thus, XCVIII - LXVI + CXL = 98 - 66 + 140 = 172.
