Find the area of the given figure by counting squares:

In complex figures, some part of the figure almost fully occupies a square and some part just touches another square. So, to calculate the area of the complex figure we consider squares that are fully filled and squares that are almost filled or just touches the square are approximated as half filled.

Number of full filled squares = 3

Number of half-filled squares = 10

Area covered by full filled squares = 3×1 = 3 sq. units

and Area covered by half-filled squares = 10×12= 5 sq. units

Total area = 3 + 5 = 8 sq. units
