The correct option is D XLIX
Before adding XXIII and XXVI, we need to convert these to Hindu- Arabic numerals.

XXIII = 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 + 1= 23
XXVI = 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 26

Thus, XXIII + XXVI = 23 + 26 = 49.

But, 49 = 40 + 9
= (50 - 10 ) + (10 - 1 )
= XL + IX
= XLIX.

Therefore, XXIII + XXVI = XLIX.
