Question

y=ax3+bx2+cx+5 touches the x-axis at the point (2,0) and cuts the y-axis at the point where its gradient is 3. Find a, b and c.

Solution

As the point where its meet the y-axis its x-coordinates = 0

y=0+0+0+5

y=5

The point is (0,5)

dydx=3ax2+2bx+c

3=c

As point (2,0) lie on the curve.

0=8a+4b6+5

4b8a=1 (1)

dydx=3ax2+2bx+3

At the point (2,0) its gradient is 0.

0=12a4b+3 (2)

Add (1) and (1),we get

12a4b+3+4b8a1=04a+2=0a=12

substitute in (2) we get b=34

a=12,b=34,c=3
