Question

y2 – 5y – 24 = 0

Open in App
Solution

Given: y2 – 5y – 24 = 0
On splitting the middle term –5y as – 8y + 3y, we get:
y2 – 8y + 3y – 24 = 0
=> y(y – 8) + 3(y – 8) = 0
=> (y – 8) (y + 3) = 0
We know that if the product of two numbers is zero, then at least one of them must be zero.
Thus,
y – 8 = 0 or y + 3 = 0
=> y = 8 or y = –3
Therefore, the solution of the given equation is y = –3, 8.
