Yaavan wanted to check the process of evaporation. He was very excited to practically check it. So, he brought a glass of water and put it on a table. He thought of leaving the glass for 5-10 days. Just when he thought everything is fine and he can leave the glass there, a doubt came to his mind. He did not heat the water in the glass.
Now can you help him and tell whether supplying heat is necessary condition for evaporation?Think about the process of evaporation.
How it happens?
When a liquid is placed in an open vessel, its molecules constantly move in different directions with different velocities. Thus, as these molecules are moving with different speeds, they possess different kinetic energies. At any particular temperature, the energies of some surface molecules may be higher so that they can overcome the forces of attraction of the neighboring molecules and can leave the liquid and come above the surface of the liquid. This process is called evaporation. Evaporation is a natural process. It occurs spontaneously at all temperatures.
So, here you can see that no heat has been supplied for the process.
Therefore, supplying heat is not a necessary condition for evaporation.
