Solution

  • Different separation techniques are present depending upon the property of the substance to be separated.
  • By considering the substances sand, water and mustard oil we can take different separation techniques.
  • In a mixture of sand, water and mustard oil, we know that sand will not dissolve in water and the particles are large enough, so we can use filter papers to separate the sand particles.
  • Water and the mustard oil form separate layers when mixed called immiscible liquids, since mustard oil is having a lower density than water so it will form an upper layer.
  • Immiscilbe liquids can be separated using a separating funnel, so when the stopper is opened the lower layer which is water can be collected in a beaker and the upper layer of oil will remain in the separating funnel.

Therefore, to separate a mixture of sand, water and mustard oil, we can use ordinary filter paper and then a separating funnel.
