You are given benzene, conc. $H_{2} S O_{4}$ and $N a O H$ . Write the equations for the preparation of phenol using these reagents.

Solution

Benzene is heated with conc. sulphuric acid to form benzene sulphonic acid. It is then heated with sodium hydroxide to give sodium phenoixde. Hydrolysis with sulphuric acid gives phenol. The reaction sequence is given above.
