Dear Student
The four reagents are:
LiAlH4 , I2 NaOH, NaHSO 3 and Schiff's Reagent
The provided compounds are:
a) CH 3CHO and CH3COCH3
Acetaldehyde and Acetone
Acetaldehyde gives positive Tollen's Test or Schiff's Reagent but Acetone does not.
Acetone gives Iodoform Test (I2 NaOH)
b) CH 3CHO and C6H5CHO
Acetaldehyde and Benzaldehyde
Aldehyde does not react with NaHSO3. LiAlH 4 is used to reduce alcohol.
Therefore, Schiff's Reagent can be used to distinguish between both of them.
Acetaldehyde can give Iodoform Test but Benzaldehyde do not. However, acetaldehyde is the only aldehyde which gives a positive Iodoform test.
c) C6H5COCH3 and C6H5CHO
Acetophenone and Benzaldehyde
One is Ketone and another one is aldehyde, therefore, acetophenone being a methyl ketone can give Iodoform Test but Benzaldehyde cannot.
Benzaldehyde can react with Schiff's reagent but Acetophenone cannot.
