Question

You are provided with two solutions of a solute, such that one of them is unsaturated and the other is saturated. Using a tiny crystal of the same solute, how will you distinguish between the above solutions?

Solution

  • Unsaturated solutions are solutions in which the amount of dissolved solute is less than the saturation point of the solvent and if the amount of dissolved solute is equal to the saturation point of the solvent, the solution is called a saturated solution.
  • If we add a small crystal of the same solute and try to stir by keeping the temperature constant if more solute does not dissolve then the solution is saturated and if the solution gets dissolved then it is the unsaturated solution.
