Yes answer given by my friend is correct, because when we add the given numbers we get

2.5×109+5.3×108

=108×(2.5×10+5.3) (taking 108 as common factor)

=108×(25+5.3) (solving multiplication and then adding digits in brackets)

=108×(30.3)

=108×(3.03×101)

=3.03×101+8 (using exponent law am×an=am+n)

=3.03×109

So, Yes answer given by my friend is correct.
