Space between particles of air is larger than space between particles of wooden table.


Particles of matter have spaces between them. Just like a stack of cricket balls would have tiny spaces in between. But unlike the cricket balls, these particles also pull each other or attract each other. We call this the intermolecular force of attraction.

The particles of a gas like air are not held together strongly and have large spaces. So when you move your hand you are able to push some molecules away easily and also move through the empty spaces easily.

But the particles in a solid are held together quite strongly with very less space. If you try to push your hand through, the particles are able to resist the push and don't move away easily. This is why you are not able to move your hand through a solid.
