b) How much did the backpack weigh in pounds?

Solution

(a) Work done is equal to the change in potential energy of the backpack
Hence, W=mgh
where, weight of object =mg, and h is the height to which the backpack is lifted
Hence,
150=120×h
h=150120=54=1.25 m

(b) Since, 1 pound=4.448 N
Let 120 N=x pounds
=x×4.448 N
x=1204.448=26.98

Hence 120 N=26.98 pounds
