Question

You measure the length of a brass rod on a hot summer day and a cold winter night using the same aluminium scale. To your surprise, you find that the length of a brass rod is found to be smaller on a hot summer day than on the winter night. Assuming that the brass rod and the aluminium scale have the same length during winter, which of the following could explain the above phenomena?

Solution

The correct option is B
Aluminium expands more than brass on heating
On a hot summer day, metals tend to expand due to the heat. Different metals have different expansion coefficients. The coefficient of linear expansion of aluminium is more than that of brass. Therefore aluminium will expand more than brass leading to an apparent decrease in the length of the brass rod when measured by an aluminium scale. So we cannot conclude that brass shrinks on heating. Instead, aluminium expands more than brass on heating.
