Since the activity is paid $8 per hour and the charge needed to do the activity is $40.

Let the number of hours worked be as x

According to the equation,

8x-40=24

Transfer the constant to the right hand side of the equation, We get

8x=24+408x=64

Dividing both sides of the equation by 8, We get

8x8=648x=8

It took 8 hours of work.
