Yugoslavia broke up in the early 1990s following the collapse of communism. As a result, the constituent republics of Yugoslavia started demanding independence. There was widespread resentment in Yugoslavia against the domination of Serbs. The first republics to declare independence were Slovenia and Croatia. Croatian independence was resisted by the Serbs within Croatia leading to a civil war within Croatia between the Croats and Serbs. The war ended in 1995. Bosnia and Herzegovina witnessed the bloodiest struggle for independence. The war in Bosnia was also led to religious violence perpetrated by the Serbs against the Muslims. Bosnia did obtain independence but only after a prolonged war that lasted till 1995.
