Zinc and hydrochloric acid react according to the reaction Zn(s)+2HCl(aq)ZnCl(aq)+H2(g). If 0.40molZn are added to hydrochloric acid containing 0.62molHCl, how many moles of H2 are produced?

Step 1: Write the equation specifying no. of moles involved

Step 2 : Finding limiting reagent

  • 1 mole of Zn reacts with 2 moles of HCl . So 0.4 moles of Zn react with 0.8 moles of HCl.
  • But 0.8 moles of HCl is not available.
  • So HCl is a limiting reagent.
  • Hence, HCl will decide the quantity.

Step 3: Finding moles of H2 produced

  • 2 moles of HCl reacts with 1 mole of Zn .
  • So 0.62 moles of HCl reacts with =12×0.62=0.31molesofZn .
  • If a mole of Zn gives 1 mole of H2 .
  • Then 0.31 moles of Zn will give 0.31 moles of H2

Therefore, the moles Of H2 produced is 0.31moles.
