Question

Zinc can easily displace hydrogen from dilute Sulphuric acid but copper cannot. Explain.

  • Displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound
  • Reactivity of zinc is more than hydrogen but the reactivity of copper is less than hydrogen in the electrochemical series.
  • It displaces hydrogen in dilute sulphuric acid and while copper is less reactive than hydrogen therefore it cannot displace hydrogen in dilute sulphuric acid.
