Zinc oxide can be reduced to the metal by heating with carbon but not Cr2O3

It is because carbon is more reactive towards oxygen than Zinc i.e. Carbon has more affinity for Oxygen than Zinc, whereas, Chromium has higher affinity towards oxygen than Carbon hence the Cr-O bond cannot be broken by Carbon . Hence Cr2O3 is not reduced.
