$Z n O$ reacts with both acids and with bases.
In acid: $Z n O + 2 H^{+} \to Z n^{2 +} + H_{2} O$
In base: $Z n O + H_{2} O + 2 O H^{-} \to [Z n (O H)_{4}]^{2 -}$

This reactivity can be used to separate different çations such as zinc(II), which dissolves in base, from manganese(II), which does not dissolve in base.
