Solution

Step 1: Gold number formula

Given: 0.25 g lyophilic colloid is added to 100 ml gold solution

i.e. 250mg lyophilic colloid is added to 100 ml gold solution.

The gold number is defined as the minimum amount of protective colloid in milligrams which prevents a color change from red to the violet of 10ml gold solution by addition of 10ml of 1% NaCl solution.

Step 2: Calculating the gold number

Amount of lyophilic colloid added to 1ml gold solution = 250100=2.5mg

Amount of lyophilic colloid added to 10ml gold solution = =2.5×10=25mg

Hence, the gold number of the lyophilic colloid is 25.
