Question

A horse continues to apply a force in order to move a cart with a constant speed. Explain why?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When the cart is moving several forces are acting on the cart.
  2. The gravitational force works downward.
  3. The frictional force works opposite to the direction of the motion.
  4. This force is resisting the motion of the cart.
  5. So to overcome the frictional force the horse has to keep applying a constant force to move the cart with constant speed.

Hence, to overcome the frictional force the horse continues to apply a constant force in order to move the cart at a constant speed.
