Question

“All vertebrates are chordates but all chordates are not vertebrates”. Justify the statement.

Open in App
Solution

All chordates have a notochord. Chordates include Urochordates, Cephalochordates (both are called protochordate), and vertebrates. In vertebrates notochord is replaced by the vertebral column (backbone), however, the vertebral column is not present in a protochordate. Therefore, all vertebrates are chordates but all chordates are not vertebrates.
