Question

An electric kettle consumes 1kW of electric power when operated at 220V. A fuse wire of what rating must be used for it?

Solution

Step1: Given data

  1. The power of the electric kettle is, P=1000watt.
  2. supplied voltage, V=220volt.

Step2: Electric fuse

  1. A fuse is a safety device that prevents any type of short circuit due to high voltage and high electric flow through a circuit.
  2. A fuse is a thin wire of high resistance and low melting point. The fuse is designed in such a way that it will protect our domestic electric appliances from any kind of short circuit.

Step3: Fuse rating and power

  1. A fuse can give a maximum current that an electrical appliance requires, this maximum amount of current is called the rating of a fuse.
  2. Now we know now, the power of a circuit is, P=VI, where, V is the supplied voltage and I is the current through the circuit.

Step4: Calculation of current

As we know, P=VI

So, the maximum current passes through the circuit is,

I=PV=1000220=4.54or4.54A.

Therefore, a fuse of rating 4.54A or above has to be used.
